Microsoft Patch Tuesday, January 2018

Happy 2018 everyone! January’s Patch Tuesday will ease you into the new year with just 23 CVEs patched. Historically January has always been a light patch month. The release patches one CVE each that’s rated “Critical”, “Moderate” and “Low”. The remianing 20 CVEs are rated “Important”. This release also includes “Critical” rated patches for for Adobe Flash and an unrated “Defense in Depth” update for Microsoft Office. The majority of these patches affect the Office suite including some serious remote code execution vulnerabilities. .NET is also affected by multiple vulnerabilities, so .NET admins will want to make sure they are up to date.

Of course a light January Patch Tuesday doesn’t mean that systems administrators are getting off easy. Unfortunately Meltdown and Spectre will likely keep IT staff in overdrive for the foreseeable future. Microsoft released an out of band advisory covering their response to these vulnerabilities.
